Brilliant Friction Stir Welding

Grenzebach presented solutions at the Austrian Foundry Symposium and further developed its cooperation with the Technical University of Ilmenau.

Light-weight construction and components for E-mobility were specifically focused on at the 61st Foundry Symposium in Austria. Grenzebach made important contributions at this event with innovative joining solutions such as friction stir welding (FSW), a technology with significant advantages compared to other methods for the processing of casting components made out of porosity-afflicted aluminum. The FSW technology from Grenzebach reduces component distortion and excels with extremely high-grade seam surfaces which - in most cases - do not require further treatment.

During the two day event hosted by the company Fill in Upper Austria, Grenzebach took the opportunity to inform experts from all over the world about their vast FSW service portfolio, which includes application consulting, trial and pilot series welding, turn-key production facilities, the development and supply of friction tools, production assistance, training, and after sales service.

With a large number of installed FSW production systems and development cells, Grenzebach’s experience and knowledge bring significant advantages to its customers. The FSW technology is continuously being developed in close cooperation with TU Ilmenau. In a recent exchange with the Technical University, Grenzebach introduced its ideas for scaling and miniaturizing the welding process; for instance, applications using less force can significantly reduce machine and especially component stress, which then allows for low wall thickness welding. Working with forces of less than 1 kN is a complete novelty that is just now going into series production.
