Founded in the year 1856, the Botanical Garden is the oldest and largest in the country, spreading across over 100 hectares of land with more than 10,000 species of plants, divided into various sections, including a Rose Garden gathering some 600 varieties of roses.

Copou Park in Iasi

Copou Park

Copou Park is the city’s oldest public park, dating back to 1834, and hosts the Mihai Eminescu Museum, dedicated to Romania’s great Romantic poet, as well as Eminescu's Linden Tree, a centuries-old tree said to have been a favorite of the poet while he lived in Iasi. The park is now also a popular venue for literature festivals, art exhibitions and fairs.

A wonderful Garden situated near one of the most important symbols of Iasi, the “Palatul Culturii” (Palace of Culture). Started in 1906–1907, the reconstruction works were stopped during World War I, and were finally completed on 11 October 1925, and the official opening was one year later. The "Moldova" National Museum Complex includes four museums located in the Palace of Culture: the Art Museum, Moldavia's History Museum, the Ethnographic Museum of Moldavia, and the "Ștefan Procopiu" Science and Technique Museum. The museums also have their own shops and libraries, as well as halls for temporary exhibitions.

Alexandru Ioan Cuza University is the oldest university of Romania, and one of its advanced research and education institutions. It is one of the five members of the Universitaria Consortium (the group of elite Romanian universities). The Alexandru Ioan Cuza University offers study programs in Romanian, English, and French. In 2008, for the third year in a row, it was placed first in the national research ranking compiled on the basis of Shanghai criteria. In the 2012, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University was included in the Top 700 universities of the world, on the position 601, together with three other Romanian universities.

Iasi is considered one of the most important cultural and economic centers of the area and was, before Bucharest, Romania’s cultural and economic capital. Students from all around Romania go to Iaşi for higher education.

  • Alexandru Ioan Cuza University - situated in Copou, is the oldest higher education institution in Romania;
  • Gheorghe Asachi Technical University – the school with the oldest engineering tradition in Romania;
  • Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy – one of the oldest medicine schools in Romania;
  • George Enescu National University of Arts – has the longest tradition of music and arts education in Romania;
  • Ion Ionescu de la Brad University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine – one of the oldest schools of its kind.

The library of the Gheorghe Asachi Technical University in Iasi, Romania, was chosen as the most majestic library in the world in a ranking by The survey included 25 libraries from all around the world and the list was still open for submissions at the time when this article was written. “Competitors” are architectural masterpieces such as the library of the Trinity College in Dublin, the Portuguese Royal Library in Rio de Janeiro, The National Library in Prague or the National Library in France.

The Vasile Alecsandri National Theatre, opened in 1840, is the first National Theatre in Romania. The building, designed according to the plans of the Viennese architects Hermann Helmer and Ferdinand Fellner, was erected between 1894 and 1896, and also hosts, starting 1956, the Iasi Romanian National Opera.

Started in 2017, Afterhills is the biggest music festival in Moldavia. Afterhills is a Romanian music and visual arts festival, where over 75,000 people gather every year to party, enjoy some amazing food and embrace new experiences.

Other music festivals: Rock'n'Iasi since 2007 and Rocanotherworld since 2016.

  • FILIT (International Festival of Literature and Translation) is an annual literature and translation festival organized by the Iași Museum of Romanian Literature and started in 2013.
  • FIE (International Education Festival), launched in 2013, is a mix of cultural and educative events.
  • International Theatre Festival for Young Audience was launched in 2008 and is hosted every October by Luceafărul Theatre.
  • Since 2010, the SFR (Romanian Film Nights) shows films from different periods of Romanian cinema as well as new films, debut films or short films, inviting actors, directors, scriptwriters and film critics to the screenings.
